Allocation Management

Dan Beaver
Thursday, February 2, 2017

Most fantasy racing games employ a variety of salary cap management schemes, but there are a variety of competitions that limit the number of allocations during a season.

Even when a player is not limited to a strict number of allocations, it pays to recognize that there are certain track of track types that benefit certain drivers. During the off-season, we have highlighted 1.5-mile doglegs, two-mile tracks, short tracks, short, flat tracks, and road courses. Restrictor-plate, superspeedways will follow shortly. These articles should be bookmarked for their charts at the end. Fantasy players will also want to browse through the driver’s Player Pages by clicking on the hyperlinks embedded in their names because during the past several weeks we have featured news items with each fulltime racer’s best tracks.

After doing one’s homework, fantasy players should arrange their notes in such a way that the information is useful. Either page ahead in the calendar and put notes there or create a word document that has all of the races listed and add notes in a column following the date. Your notes may vary, but to get started take a look at the graph at the bottom of this article for the top-three drivers for each course.

There are a lot of familiar names in this list and some that might seem a little surprising. Paul Menard is not the first driver who comes to mind on most courses, so one might be a distinct advantage by starting him at Auto Club Speedway. Chase Elliott may only have two starts at Michigan International Speedway, but they both ended in runner-up finishes and he is likely to challenge for a top-five in each of 2017’s contests.

Plate tracks are inherently unpredictable and so one really would not want to risk an allocation on a driver who might be more useful elsewhere. Austin Dillon and Clint Bowyer at Daytona International Speedway and Talladega SuperSpeedway respectively make good differentiators.

Fourth-year driver Kyle Larson pops up three times in the chart below at Pocono Raceway, Darlington Raceway, and Homestead-Miami Speedway, which is one of the reasons the competition feared him during the last year’s playoff run.

Kevin Harvick has been strong on so many different courses that it is difficult to decide where to start him. Of the 23 tracks hosting races this season, he has a better than 10th-place average finish on 10 courses. Three others feature averages of 10.0-10.3, so players will want to be aware that he is at his best at Phoenix International Raceway, Homestead, and Darlington.

Ultimately, winning in fantasy NASCAR is about keeping good notes, so whenever you think you have an insight, jot the information down. That little tidbit could be the difference in taking home the prize or making excuses for why your roster underperformed.
